I am trying to generate a dummy variable for STEM field (1 = yes, 0 - no) for a free text field. There are (literally) hundreds of 4-digit codes, but there is only "XXXX" in my dataset for NON-STEM fields.
Sample of STEMOCC Field
[KEY: STEM is my YES/NO variable, STEMOCC contains either a four digit code or "XXXX"]
I want it to create the new variable STEM based on having anything except "XXXX".
I've tried to do this by (Please don't laugh -- I'm very new to R):
data$STEM<-factor(rep(NA,length(data$STEMOCC)), levels=c("1","0"))
data$STEM[data$STEMOCC %in% c("XXXX")] <- "1"
data$STEM[is.na(data$STEMOCC)] <- "0"
And
data$STEM<-revalue(data$STEMOCC, c("XXXX"="0", "****"="1"))

Can you make this question more reproducible? It helps to have a sample of your data, as well as seeing what code you've tried up to this point.

I think this is what you're looking for.ifelse(df$STEMOCC == "XXXX", 0, 1)

@hmhensen this works perfectly! I had tried this a little different way, but had given up! Thank you!
