Trying to iterate mysql query if it returns empty results

I have mysql query i need to iterate it 3 time with some delay if the result is empty. if i get the result at first instance then it has to return the result. else it will iterate.
my code:
async function checkMySqlQuery(queries_data,callback){
try {
connection.connect(function(err) {
if (err) {throw err;}//
});
var db_queries=queries_data['db_queries'];
var params=queries_data['params'];
var mysql={'data':""};
connection.query(db_queries, params, function(

) {

if (err) {

} else {
var temp=rows;
if(temp.length >0){
mysql.data = {"info" :this.sql,"msg":gloabl_vars.messages.success,"res":temp};

}

Am getting error as await is valid only for async function. eventhough my function is async the also same error. if i remove await then loop is not waiting for the mysql to run n check the result. it is running without waiting.
please let me know what am missing in the above. thanks in advance.
