What is the physical significance and its interpretation of negative ratios in external division [on hold]

Guys I really need to know how to interpret negative ratios when a point divides 2 points externally.
for instance the point (0,0) divides the line segment joining (3,0) and (4,0) respectively externally int the ratio 4:3 but divides it internally in the ratio
-3:4.From this example is it always true that if a point divides a line segment internally in the ratio -a:b but divides it externally in the ratio b:a where a,b>0
and b>a
