Updating model from iOS push notification

I am trying to update my model upon push notification. Since my payload can be higher than 4 KB, I want to download relevant content from my server. There are many ways to do it but I can't decide which one works better for most scenarios. I don't want to repeat my self all around the app. I am targeting iOS 10+

  • Using Silent Push

func application(_ application: UIApplication, didReceiveRemoteNotification userInfo: [AnyHashable : Any], fetchCompletionHandler completionHandler: @escaping (UIBackgroundFetchResult) -> Void) { }

This works quite well if the user didn't kill the app from the app switcher. When the notification comes I extract the payload, download the data from server and update my model. However it doesn't work all the time. So when user opens the app, by clicking the icon old data can be shown.

  • When User clicks the notification

func userNotificationCenter(_ center: UNUserNotificationCenter, didReceive response: UNNotificationResponse, withCompletionHandler completionHandler: @escaping () -> Void) { }

This also works but with a delay. Because when user clicks the notification, I must grab the payload, download the data and show related UI. It feels laggy.

  • UNNotificationServiceExtension and UNNotificationContentExtension
    I am not sure which one or both is suited for my use case. AFAIK, with UNNotificationServiceExtension I can do some work before presenting notification to user. It also seems feasible to download data in viewDidLoad() of UNNotificationContentExtension
