Eigenvalue corresponding to state variable

Using the eig() function in Matlab I have calculated the eigenvalues of a matrix. I also have to determine what state variable every eigenvalue corresponds to, or at least which eigenvalue, if any, is more dominant for a certain state variable. Can this be done using the eigenvector?
Google has led me to something called participation factor/ matrix but I don't know how to calculate one of those.
